Norse raids, explorations and conquests changed medieval Europe. The Nordic world challenged Christian and Islamic civilisations and accelerated state formation, commerce and warfare. Around 790, the Vikings emerged as heathen pirates but by the tenth century Norse settlers were busy establishing powerful and wealthy colonies in Normandy, Britain and Ireland, they were laying the foundations of Russia and settling distant lands across the North Atlantic. By 1100 a fusion of southern and northern influences was shaping the High Middle Ages and the Icelandic sagas were written up by the thirteenth century as some of the best stories ever told.
The lectures will outline the mentality, the ships, the politics and lives of people, it will study Viking lands, ambitions, victims and legacies. Particular emphasis will be on understanding the interplay of violence, power and trade, and how people experienced the effects of contact. Sources will include archaeology, monastic annals, laws, and sagas.
Lecture 1. The first Viking age, 790-900: overcoming the tyranny of distance: attacks, ships, beliefs
The lecture will focus on the classic Pirenne-Bolin discussion as rekindled by McCormick: the role of the European periphery, was the Viking experience destructive or central to the formation of medieval Europe – and why did the Scandinavians begin to attack?
Lecture 2. A Viking world, 790-1169: The Dublin kingdom – slaves, trade, sagas and myths
The lecture will look in detail at one of the many polities established by Viking invaders as it was transformed into a central hub of West European trade and the stronghold of a mercenary fleet that changed the dynamics – and stories - of medieval Ireland
Lecture 3. Viking migrant states and the Norman legacy, 1000-1200
The legacy of the Vikings is evident in the foundation of many European states. The lecture will show how migrant Vikings designed a state on virgin soil in Iceland, how the Scandinavians influenced state building in Russian, England and Normandy, and how the Viking experience created Scandinavian kingdoms
