The rural gentry of the changing era studies systematically the changes of the township system and the rural gentry since the late Qing Dynasty, especially during the Republic of china for the first time. Grasping the squire as the starting point, the work clearly analyzes the historical course of the power structure in modern village from Bao-Jia to autonomy to Bao-Jia systems and “village election politics”. The squire in republican China began to disintegrate, differentiate and drop out the historical stage during the process of power transformation. With the squire’s leaving their village and the corruption of rural grassroots power, the rural society fell into collapse and offered the hotbed for the social revolutionary. In the meantime, the readers can be enlightened from the methodology and epistemology of historical research, which includes the macro explanation of the regional history, the speculative appealing of the empirical study and the realistic solicitude of the historical research. Furthermore, the common problems the work presents will help expand the study on the change of rural social structure.
