Ari Larissa Heinrich is Professor of Chinese Cultural Studies at the Australian National University. He researches the intersections of medicine, art, postcoloniality, and race, with a focus on stereotypes of Chinese identity. His new book, Chinese Surplus:  Biopolitical Aesthetics and the Medically Commodified Body (Duke University Press, 2018) explores the racialized aesthetics of the human body as commodity in the age of biotech.

韓瑞 (Ari Heinrich) 教授任教於澳大利亞國立大學亞太研究學院，中華全球研究中心。他的研究貫串醫療，藝術，後殖民，以及種族問題，並深入探討華人認同的刻板印象。新近出版《CHINESE SURPLUS：生命政治美學與藥物商品化的身體》（2018年美國杜克大學出版社），探索在生化科技時代，商品化的人類身體如何展現種族化美學。

内容简介

In this talk I explore the history of Frankenstein’s monster—in his lesser-known Chinese afterlife.

此次演講探索《科學怪人》中的著名怪物在中國鮮為人知的遭遇。

Sketching out a quantitative genealogy of the early Chinese translation of the idea of Frankenstein (which actually preceded the translation of Mary Shelley’s famous book itself), I use this genealogy to highlight major shifts in representations of the body over the last two centuries.

《科學怪人》的譯本很晚才在中國出現，但是《科學怪人》的主題概念卻早在中國通行。透過多種重要文化翻譯的案例，可建立中國《科學怪人》主題概念的系譜。這個系譜凸顯了兩個世紀以來，身體再現的主要變遷。

Along the way, I trace the unexpected relationship that emerges between this cultural translation of Frankenstein and the late nineteenth-century political stereotype of China as a “sleeping lion” made famous by Liang Qichao and others.  In this talk I aim to establish some of the basic conceptual vocabulary for the emergence of a biopolitical aesthetics in China since the nineteenth century, and to contextualize representations of the body and its antagonists—and thus what counts as “real”—in a more biotechnologically sophisticated age.

十九世紀末梁啟超等提出「中國如『睡獅』」的刻板政治形象，仔細對比此刻板形象與《科學怪人》的文化翻譯，兩者之間的關聯令人詫異。演講過程中將提出一些基本的概念語彙，以說明十九世紀以來中國生命政治美學的興起。在今天生化科技趨於精密化的時代，我們尤其需要這些語彙，以便理解身體再現派及持反論的真實派之間的論爭，將之脈絡化。
